Bankruptcy Terms Explained in Plain English

Bankruptcy Trustee

Plain-English Definition

A person appointed to administer a bankruptcy case, with duties that depend on the chapter.

Why it matters

A Chapter 7 trustee examines the case and may administer nonexempt assets. A Chapter 13 trustee oversees plan administration and distributions. The trustee is not your personal attorney and does not replace advice about your rights and options.

A simple example

A debtor asks their own attorney how to respond to a trustee’s request for financial records.

Illustrative only; not a prediction of any case outcome.
