Bankruptcy Terms Explained in Plain English

Discharge

Plain-English Definition

A court-ordered release from personal liability for certain debts, with protection against collecting those discharged debts.

Why it matters

A discharge does not erase every debt or automatically remove a valid lien. The chapter, the type of obligation, and the circumstances matter. An attorney can explain which debts may remain after your case.

A simple example

Someone with medical bills and a car loan needs to understand the difference between eliminating personal liability and keeping a financed vehicle.

Illustrative only; not a prediction of any case outcome.
