Bankruptcy Terms Explained in Plain English
Proof of Claim
Plain-English Definition
A document filed by a creditor stating the debt it claims is owed in the bankruptcy case.
Why it matters
A filed claim is not necessarily the final word on the amount owed or how much will be paid. Claims may be reviewed or challenged. The debtor’s own disclosure duties are separate, and an attorney can explain how claims affect the case.
A simple example
A creditor files an amount that differs from the client’s records, and the client asks their attorney to review the discrepancy.
Illustrative only; not a prediction of any case outcome.
