Bankruptcy Terms Explained in Plain English

Secured Debt

Plain-English Definition

A debt backed by a lien or security interest in property, such as a home or vehicle.

Why it matters

The obligation to pay and the creditor’s rights in the property are separate questions. A discharge may affect personal liability without removing a valid lien. Keeping the property depends on the loan, the chapter, and your circumstances.

A simple example

A person with a financed car needs advice about both the loan and the lender’s rights in the car.
