Bankruptcy Terms Explained in Plain English

Unsecured Debt

Plain-English Definition

A debt that is not backed by a lien or security interest in particular property.

Why it matters

Credit-card balances and medical bills are common examples. Unsecured does not necessarily mean dischargeable: some obligations have special treatment or survive bankruptcy. Your attorney reviews the actual debts, not just their labels.

A simple example

A debtor has credit-card bills and another obligation with special legal treatment; both must be reviewed before predicting what bankruptcy will accomplish.

Illustrative only; not a prediction of any case outcome.
